Yoga at MOMA

I’ve been doing yoga since before I knew the name for it. Which is nothing unusual: children roll and leap and twist into asanas without knowing there are verbs and nouns for what they do. I can't remember when I learned the word "yoga" but as I grew into adolescence I searched my school library for books about the ancient art. In those days, in my neighbourhood, yoga was so uncommon as to be suspect, an activity only for freaks or hippies or beatniks. I may have been one or all of those things but labels did not affect my love of bending and stretching and breathing into poses.

Offering It Up

Heather Douglas

My introduction to yoga was by my friend, her VCR, and a Baron Baptiste video. It was at the time of Madonna's publicized yoga craze, and rumor had it that Baron was her teacher! I happily sun saluted along to his power yoga in my living room until I became pregnant and joined my first group yoga class with a real live teacher. This was 1997.

This Waltz

“Asked whether he also does yoga to build strength and agility for his stage shows, Mr. Cohen, his demeanor courtly but reserved, smiled and replied, “That is my yoga.”’
- The New York Times. Feb. 24, 2009.

Last year I saw Leonard Cohen in concert. Wearing a sleek dark suit and a black fedora he did his amazingly elegant and sexy brand of yoga for three hours in front of a full house. And the audience responded with their own asana, one called Standing Ovation which occurred after almost every song.

First Impressions of Hot Yoga

This past week, I went to a new Moksha yoga studio that opened in my neighbourhood to try my hand at hot yoga. While I find I get plenty hot in my regular yoga classes, I had yet to attend a bona fide hot yoga session and was curious. And, I'm here to tell you, I got hot. But not entirely for those reasons you might think.

It was an insanely frigid day and I was craving a hit of heat like salvation. So I bounced up the stairs to the second-floor studio, which spreads itself handsomely above a tattered variety store, and sallied into a classroom almost too late for admittance (there's a strictly observed 15-minutes-before-class arrival expectation here).

the corporatization of yoga

I was watching an author on Breakfast Television this morning discuss his latest book, Yoga Inc., and the subject gave me pause. Once the province of gurus alone, yoga is now practised by such media-star personalities as Madonna and Sting. Yoga paraphernalia is everywhere, from malls to supermarkets to big-box bookstores, and the number of practitioners is on a steady climb. What prompted the change from spiritual to secular--and who is cashing in? Can yoga survive with its good karma intact?

Discovering Yoga

I would like to learn more aboute yoga. Never practiced it but have heard from several friends of mine that they are practicing it. I have tried Tai Chi in the past and loved it. Any connections?

Benefits of yoga

Hi everyone

I just joined this forum. I've been practicing yoga for many years and last year I took the teachers training course. It was amazing. I would highly recommend it for those interested in learning more about yoga postures and the science and philosophies behind it.
There are so many benefits to practicing yoga. It definitely improves your health for the better, keeps you looking young, vibrant and glowing. The more I practice, the better I feel.
My favorite posture is headstand. http://www.lexiyoga.com/poses/head-stand
I love the energizing feeling of doing inversions.
